In April 2006, John Contrubis and Sindy Gordon opened BAT Entertainment Inc. after numerous years working with writers and filmmakers above and below the line.
Prior to starting their own consulting company they served on the Executive Staff of the Writers Guild of America, East. Mr. Contrubis, since 2002 as Assistant Counsel, represented motion picture and television writers, as well as newswriters. One of his primary responsibilities was the administration of the WGA Minimum Basic Agreement (MBA) and the WGA Low Budget Agreement. In addition he was involved in legislative matters which affected the interest of writers. In Public Relations and Events since 2002, Ms. Gordon handled press and events as well as produced the WGA Awards in NYC for four years. Prior to that she had worked extensively in all facets of film marketing and public relations.
During the early stages of developing BAT Entertainment they decided to utilize the internet not only to focus on the company but to create a tool that would make the flow of information from clients both efficient and secure. Dealing extensively with numerous scripts, drafts and other written material, it was essential that the presentation be highly organized. The result was REELot.
For security they wanted to implement a way to have all the work available yet only selected works accessible at times. Each entity has the option of a distinct access code so the process remains the same and the page is unchanged. An access log is kept in order to monitor who has viewed the material and when. Another benefit is that the writer can update their own page when necessary — either another draft or new treatment, pitch or script. This is all accomplished on one website rather than going to a different location for each writer or having to email for information when needed.
Both John and Sindy have attended and participated in film festivals in the United States and Canada for over fifteen years. Their most gratifying experiences are working with and talking to writers both established and emerging. There are costly services that exist from posting scripts for production companies to “view” to script consultations from anonymous readers. In the long run its about networking. REELot is a tool that allows the writer to present their work in a professional and concise style and in a more intimate presence than current online services provide.
Networking and feedback are essential elements to a career in writing. REELot was also established as a site to give writers an outlet to share their experiences from festivals to determine which are best suited for their needs. Some festivals excel at programming while others may be better at offering unfettered access to industry professionals. Another consideration is cost — for the festival and accommodations. An outlet for an open line of communication and coverage from an attendees experience will assist in making the best decisions. It offers information as well as connections to attendees prior to the event so writers arrive to greet friends and enrich their community.
REELot exists in an industry with many options and opportunities. They hope it inspires and indulges in an effort to support commitment to careers in writing.
